Get The Basics Right

By Simon On October 13, 2008 Under SEO Techniques

I see them everyday… people seem to think that there are lots of secrets being hidden from public knowledge that will give them complete success online. Guess what… There are none. Some techniques are more advanced than others, but none are kept away from the publics eyes.

It seems that everyone wants to skip the basics and get stuck into the advanced techniques, with the mindset that this will earn them better rankings and more readers. If you just get the basics right and do those small one percenters than you will achieve far more success than diving into the deep end without knowing how to swim.

I admit, a few months back, I was the same as these people who thought that there was a quicker way to achieve anything. I achieved nothing on that site – it was a complete failure. Then I started this blog, and have only concentrated on the basics SEO steps, doing 301 redirects, having the correct permalink structure, building links, putting keywords in the title tag and using header tags to their full potential. And this blog now has very strong rankings in the search engines because of this, not because of some fancy unheard of technique.

What I am trying to get across is, don’t go looking for the easy way through. Do what you know well and keep at it, and you will achieve far more. Focus your efforts on improving what you know.

Alright Simon, geeze this is getting crazy!

You must be in a secret cult of the Permalinks because it seems like I am getting haunted by this everywhere I go.

My permalinks are ugly and I need to fix them soon. This is just one more kick in the butt I see to get it done. Thanks.

You are right about the basics and that is what I am working on doing right now, the basics….or course while commenting and building relationships with bloggers like yourself.

Peace to the bloggers!

My basic strategy involves posting everyday. It doesn’t get any more fundamental than that. If you want a lot of visitors post frequently and consistently because people want to see new content.

I agree, that’s why I always say that life without Google feels good ;) I mean, we care too much about SEO, Google and search engines sometimes. Going out, writing good contents and getting involved in the community is what will get you traffic and Google traffic will come. Then it’s time for some SEO and optimization. As you said, get the basics right.

I agree when you post everyday you get more traffic because people like to see fresh new content whenever they visit your blog but be careful with this as too much content may become hard for your readers to keep up with so it’s always better to balance things.
Thanks for the good advice Simon.

Nice tip. I guess this is where information overload comes in where a person wants to make money from his blog and is getting a ton of info about making money but he doesn’t even have his blog yet so he shouldn’t dwell w/making money at first.

Did anyone else notice he didn’t mention content?

Yes you have to write somewhat consistently. You do not have to write daily, especially in the beginning….considering you have lil-nil readers anyway.

As Simon said (basic) SEO, link building, keywords, relationships…are the very basics you need to be concerned with.

That will bring the readers for which you can start writing even more for if you wish.

Sorry for not mentioning content, but I was really referring to SEO, although I was also referring to the basics of everything, including content (just generalizing)

No apologies my man. I was pointing out to those that seemed stuck on going post crazy, that that is not necessary in the very beginning….I thought you may have even left it out on purpose for that reason. :)

There is a portuguese saying that fits this perfectly. Those people like to “put the car in front of the bulls!” .p

Getting the basics right; sounds like a very good idea, and very good advice. Of course, also writing good content should be one of the basic steps. Good job.

indeed. sometimes it’s difficult to do these basics on a continuing basis. nothing terribly dramatic to be done, just similar steps of a plan, over and over, until results appear.

I agree, starting with the basics and getting them down is the best idea. I myself am also guilty of attempting advanced techniques to try and ‘fast track’ my success, hopefully I have learned from my mistakes now (although I still make them :P )

How To Make Money

So true. I have been guilty of this myself. But the last little bit I make sure I stick to the 80/20 rule for the “work part” of my day, then if I want to try something “fancy” I do it after work hours…lol

P.S. As a response to Christmas 2008, if you’re doing the same things and not getting results, especially with the article marketing (building links) adjust your keyword targeting, you’ll see results faster.

It takes a long time to build a presence on the net involving lot of hard work and effort. Build content for your readers and not SEO. However, as you say, basics need to be adhered to such as correct titles, headers, etc… Get a basic understanding of on page and off page SEO and you wont go far wrong.

Hi Simon,
That’s a good message you’re sending to everyone that there’s no shortcut for success. It relies a lot on passion, self-belief and simply learning and improving yourself. I think you got all these qualities too when I heard you say: “school’s out, now I can get back to my blog” ….not the exact words though.
