I had a similar experience with Godaddy registering a name that it told me was available. I've read that they do that with lost of domains and hold them for a few days hoping they can get more money for them. Check back after a week or so and see if its available to register then.

I used to be a big time domainer a few years back holding over 150 domains at one point. My advice is never to search for dropped domains on godaddy! One time they showed the domain registered and I checked on domainsite it was available. So I registered it, but domainsite refunded the money because the domain was already taken by godaddy.
